Layer 3 Application Awareness and Layer 2 Economics, Operations and Interworking

Optimized for Today’s Networks
Hammerhead Systems’ HSX 6000 is the first in a new category of Layer 2.5 Edge platforms enabling aggregation, interworking and migration of the full breadth of access protocols across any core infrastructure. Hammerhead’s Layer 2.5 aggregation approach combines the best of Layer 3 application awareness and MPLS connectivity with the best of Layer 2 economics, operations and interworking. The HSX 6000 is optimized to enable Service Providers to accelerate the profitable delivery of Ethernet services, fully interworked with legacy services, at a fraction of the cost and complexity of other solutions.

MPLS Pseudowire Aggregation
The HSX 6000 leads the market in Pseudowire aggregation and switching solutions, including innovations such as Dry Martini, which allows for the transport of Pseudowires over sub-IP transport networks. In this manner, IP services can be abstracted over a variety of Data Link Layer protocols spanning legacy (FR, PPP, HDLC, ATM, IMA and CES) and Ethernet services. The HSX 6000 also leads the market as the first to support Pseudowire Switching and Multi-hop.

Ethernet Services
Hammerhead offers Service Providers a full range of options for adding Ethernet-based service offerings to their product lines, including both E-LINE and E-LAN services that leverage Ethernet Virtual Private Lines (EVPL) and Virtual Private LAN Services (VPLS), respectively.  The HSX 6000 uniquely offers Service Providers the flexibility to deliver these services either over native Ethernet or by leveraging existing investments in SONET/SDH infrastructure. The HSX 6000 supports dense Gigabit Ethernet aggregation as well as Ethernet-over-SONET/SDH using GFP and X.86 protocols. To enable efficient aggregation of triple play traffic, the HSX 6000 offers the industry’s highest density of native Gigabit Ethernet aggregation, with full QoS and metering capabilities on all ports.

Bandwidth Pooling
The HSX 6000’s patent-pending switch geometry fundamentally lowers the cost structure at the edge of carrier networks. Through the industry’s first Bandwidth Pooling architecture, the HSX 6000 virtualizes key switch resources and eliminates stranded capacity on forwarding cards. Service Providers can now cost-effectively add capacity in a linear fashion, in line with customer demand, substantially improving ROI.

Service Agile Ports
The HSX 6000 features Service Agile Ports which enable flexible software-based provisioning of physical ports for a variety of services and speeds, eliminating costly truck rolls and reducing OPEX by future-proofing networks from changes in the service mix.

Service Interworking Engine
The HSX 6000 utilizes a distributed Service Interworking Engine, critical for scaling Any-to-Any Interworking without compromising performance or QoS enforcement.

Dual Control Planes
The HSX 6000 was designed to be best-in-class in connecting simultaneously to MPLS and ATM networks. The Dual Control Plane architecture gives Service Providers the flexibility to transition customer traffic to a common MPLS core in a controlled and operationally tractable manner.
